A little motivation, that may change your teenage life

Teenage – have you ever thought about the origin of this word?

‘Teenage’ is often used as a substitute for the word ‘adolescence’. People often relate these two words and get confused. Teenage was first used in the year 1921 (though I don’t have any evidence to prove this fact) for a group of students who aged between thirteen and nineteen, as they had a common suffix, i.e., “teen”. At that very moment, it wasn’t related to the word adolescence anyway.

‘Adolescence’ means ‘to grow up’. In biological terms, it is that period in a human life when a person is in a stage of achieving puberty. It is not sure in every case that at which age it starts or ends. In some cases, it may start at the age of fourteen whereas at the age of nine in other. In a similar way, it may end at the age of seventeen in some cases whereas at the age of twenty-two in other.

My question is… “How can these two words be used as synonyms?”

As I visualise the present world, I find that the teenagers themselves get much more excited for their age-group than needed. They think that now it’s time for fun, enjoyment and entertainment. They never stay calm and think it in a way that this is the right time to frame their intellectual level. They never think that they are in adolescence too.

When we hear the word ‘teenager’, we often visualise a group of grown-up children who are having fun, whereas when we hear the word ‘adolescent’, we have a visualisation of a single child who is concerned about self in his/her growing stage.

Now my question is… “If we use teenager and adolescence as synonyms, why do we have two different visualisations for both?”

We have a number of examples that people who developed their intellectual levels in their teenage and are listed among the great people when they grew elder.

Framing one’s mind is an art. When a person achieves this art, he can do anything. It all depends on what you think and how you think. In the coming paragraphs, you will learn how to get control over your mind in any situation.

The adolescent people are often confused between kids and grown-ups as they are in between these two. I assume them as children, as they are not fully grown-up.

These children are so sensitive that whenever a problem comes in their life they take it in a way they should not. Adolescence, time of life from onset of puberty to full adulthood. The exact period of adolescence, which varies from person to person, falls approximately between the ages 12 and 20 and encompasses both physiological and psychological changes. Physiological changes lead to sexual maturity and usually occur during the first several years of the period. This process of physical changes is known as puberty, and it generally takes place in girls between the ages of 8 and 14, and boys between the ages of 9 and 16. In puberty, the pituitary gland increases its production of gonadotropins, which in turn stimulate the production of predominantly oestrogen in girls, and predominantly testosterone in boys. Oestrogen and testosterone are responsible for breast development, hair growth on the face and body, and deepening voice. These physical changes signal a range of psychological changes, which manifest themselves throughout adolescence, varying significantly from person to person and from one culture to another. Psychological changes generally include questioning of identity and achievement of an appropriate sex role; movement toward personal independence; and social changes in which, for a time, the most important factor is peer group relations. Adolescence in Western societies tends to be a period of rebellion against adult authority figures, often parents or school officials, in the search for personal identity. Many psychologists regard adolescence as a by-product of social pressures specific to given societies, not as a unique period of biological turmoil. In fact, the classification of a period of life as “adolescence” is a relatively recent development in many Western societies, one that is not recognised as a distinct phase of life in many other cultures.

There are a number of events in life that cause teenagers to experience stress. Such events, which are called stressors can include changing schools, going on a first date, competing in sports, having a job, participation in extracurricular activities and throwing a party. Teenagers can also feel under stress if there are high expectations placed upon them by parents and teachers, if they are ahead or behind their peers in physical development, or if there is family dysfunction such as abuse or alcoholism at home.

If a teenager allows stressors he or she is dealing with to pile up and does not deal with them in a proper manner, he or she will experience distress. Too much emotional and mental stress can cause teenagers to go into a physical state of distress. The stress depletes the brain of important chemicals needed to regulate emotion which results in physical and mental symptoms that can disrupt the enjoyment of normal life.

In addition, if the so-called “happy” neurotransmitters in the brain, including serotonin, noradrenalin and dopamine, fail, a person’s tolerance to stress declines even more. Poor diet, lack of regular sleep, as well as a lack of physical exercise all make it harder for the body to replenish its stores of these chemicals when they are depleted.

Too much stress can have many adverse side effects. Stress can make a teenager more susceptible to illness. A teenager under stress can feel very tired and ill-equipped, to deal with challenges in life. Distress can cause depression, a constant sense of boredom, severe emotional upset, irritable bowel syndrome and ulcers among other things. A teenager needs to learn proper coping techniques early in order to avoid a lifetime of constant overstress.

Some of the Stressors and problems that come across teenagers

Family Breakdown
Parents with drug and alcohol, domestic violence or other relational problems create a hotbed of stress for teenagers. To deal with it, children can play a major role. This problem can be treated in two ways. Firstly, get aggressive and do take all the steps in an angry manner, i.e., throw away the drugs and alcohols or stand against the domestic violence by adopting violence in self. This may sometimes increase the problem rather than being a solution. Secondly, the child thinks over the problem calmly and finds a way in which he adapts such a way that expresses his immense love towards his parents and force them to realise that they are wrong themselves, they shouldn’t adopt these things as it might affect the future of their children. I think no parents on this earth wants to destroy future of their children.
Teens often say that school performance is their top stressor. While academic achievement is highly valued by teachers and parents — and a fast way to earn their approval — it is not always easy. Youth who struggle academically or who have learning impairments face an even harder time. To deal with such situations, I would like to say that “Every child is a genius”. Studies show that an average human being used only 10% of their brain in their lifetime, the rest 90% remains unconquered. This itself shows how much brain and thinking capacity is just wasted. Being a teenager, it is the perfect time to develop your brain and thinking capacity. One should always remember “I am a born GENIUS with UNLIMITED potential”. You would be thinking why did I mention to remember this quote. The answer is, whenever you feel stress over learning something, just recall this quote, I am definitely sure that you will get sufficient confidence and will not only be able to overcome your unwanted stress but also get such confidence that you yourself can develop your own learning technique to that particular subject or topic. Just remember that each of your elders has already gone through this stage and learnt it, then why can’t you.

Body Image
What a teenager thinks about how peers regard his appearance, affects stress levels. On this topic, I must say, a person good at heart is the most beautiful person in the society. Never mind if you don’t have an excellent look. I know that it matters a bit, but the thing that matters much more is your nature and character of living. It’s never seen how a person reacts in front of someone who is at a higher designation to him, the thing that matters is how does a person react to someone who is at the bottom, at a lower designation to him. I am definitely sure that if you develop such qualities, you will become the most beautiful person in the world.So, rather than giving time in front of a mirror, give time on thinking how to develop your good nature and character.

Family Criticism
Some parents see their children as miniature adults.  This attitude results in disapproval and negative comments by parents. While criticism is most damaging when children are young, it still strains teenagers over time. It’s my humble request to all the parents that never criticise your children, irrespective of the fault they have made. If you do so, you are just developing hatred towards yourself in minds of your own children and children, never develop such hatred about your parents in your minds even if they sometimes get violent. The reason for violence of elders may not be always the mistakes of the children, sometimes the stresses of an outer world may lead to such harsh reaction towards the children. But as this article is about self-motivation of teenagers, I must say that elders always scold and punish their younger ones only because they care for you. They never want their younger ones to do any of the wrong things. As they are elder to you, they might have gone through such situations themselves which they don’t want you to repeat. So never take scoldings and punishments in a way of criticism, rather take it positively that there is someone who is pointing out your faults. Keep on improving yourself every day. No one is perfect and doing mistakes proves that you are a human, but doing the same mistakes again shows that you are immature.

Living in a sibling’s shadow, feeling invisible, fighting over possessions and privileges, coping with annoying personality traits and having to babysit are all genuine stressors attached to siblings. Firstborns have the highest level of anxiety, while those born later tend to be self-conscious.

  1. Can not agree more to “Anyone working with teens should know the science and adjust their behavior and policies accordingly”. It is really frustrated to see people deal with teens and children so careless. Daily impact from environment is too enormous to fight if only be school or parents. Important message should be accepted by public~ blessing the whole word
